Abstract

The plant Spermacoce hispida Linn (Rubiaceae) commonly known as Shaggy button weed or jointed button weed is been in practice as a traditional medicine for various disorders. In order to document the traditional wisdom on the plant the present study was aimed evaluate the antinociceptive activity of the ethanolic extract of Spermacoce hispida (SHE) employing the acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions and Tail immersion models. SHE (200mg/kg), showed significant analgesic or antinociceptive potential when compared to that of the standard drug Aspirin 100 mg/kg. and Pentazocine 5 mg/kg respectively.
